The G8 Prayer Vigil began on Thursday, June 24th and continued through to Saturday, June 26th. It coincided with the gathering of the world leaders for the G8 Summit held here in Huntsville. As well as a tent for silent prayer, there were opportunities for discussion and celebration.

Many different faith groups participated including some of the Christian Communities in Huntsville as well as the Buddhist, Muslim, Bahá'í and the First Nations. They shared the meaning of their forms of prayer and expressed a deep appreciation to be part of this opportunity. Pastoral charges that were not able to be present, joined in prayer where ever they were. Trinity folk were the constant, joining in the vigil and providing muffins and tea and coffee from Trinity’s kitchen for all who stopped by.
The special flame and its beautiful cylinder glass holder set on a round solid stone base was provided by Jonathan and Celine McKay, owners of the store ‘Sustain’.
For all who took part, it was a meaningful and rich experience.

A quote from the 2010 Religious Leaders’ Summit statement (held prior to the world leaders G8 Summit):
“A common tenet in many faith traditions is that we should treat others as we would have them treat us. This “Golden rule” is a basic human principle which cuts across cultures and faith traditions, and calls us to a collective standard of mutual care.
As a people of faith and as concerned global citizens, we urge our communities to do our part to reduce poverty, care for the Earth and invest in peace...” — all of which will work toward the improvement of maternal health, this summit’s priority.
